Name that kitten! Okay, call me crazy...call me stupid... call me whatever you want, but yes, I broke down and let Keith get a little black kitten for Easter. A black cat, of our neighbors, had kittens and one of them was a tiny little black female. So.... end result is below but we are stuck for a name for this one, so I am posting here to have a name that kitten contest. There is no prize, just the honor of knowing your name was chosen for this yet to be named kitten.

My TOP 10 list: Karl did a list of the top 10 punk albums, and Victoria did a list of the top 10 folk albums of the 60's and 70's. So, I decided to give this a try and list the top 10 vocalists or groups of the 60's and 70's who influenced me during that era and the one song of theirs, and a few of the lyrics to that song that really got me going or got to me in some way.

1. Image Hosted by ImageShack.us Janis Joplin: Me and Bobby Magee-

Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose,
Nothin' aint worth nothin' but it's free,
Feelin' good was easy Lord when Bobby sang the blues,
Feelin' good was good enough for me,
Good enough for me and Bobby MaGee.

2. Image Hosted by ImageShack.us Joan Baez: Children of Darkness

For I am a wild and a lonely child
And the son of an angry man
Now with the high wars raging
I would offer you my hand
For we are the children of darkness
And the prey of a proud, proud land.

3. Image Hosted by ImageShack.us Bob Dylan: Mr. Tambourine Man

Then take me disapearin' through the smoke rings of my mind,
Down the foggy ruins of time, far past the frozen leaves,
The haunted, frightened trees, out to the lonely beach,
Far from the twisted reach of crazy sorrow.
Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free,
Silouetted by the sea, circled by the circus sands,
With all memory and fate driven deep beneath the waves,
Let me forget about today until tomorrow.

Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
I'm not sleepy and their aint not place I'm going to.
Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
And in the jingle jangle morning I'll come followin' you.

4. Image Hosted by ImageShack.us Arlo Guthrie: City of New Orleans

All along the southbound odyssey,
The train pulls out at Kankakee,
Rolls along past houses, farms and fields.
Passin' trains that have no names,
Freight yards full of old black men,
And graveyards of the rusted automobiles.

Good morning America how are you?
Don't you know me I'm your native son,
I'm the train they call the city of New Orleans,
I'll be gone five hundred miles when the day is done.

5. Image Hosted by ImageShack.us Joni Mitchell: A Case of You

Oh you are in my blood like holy wine,
You taste so bitter and so sweet,
Oh I could drink a case of you,
I could drink a case of you, darling,
And I would still be on my feet,
Oh I'd still be on my feet.

6. Image Hosted by ImageShack.us John Prine: Sam Stone

Sam Stone came home to his wife and family,
After serving in the conflict overseas,
and the time that he served,
Had shattered all his nerves,
And left a little shrapnel in his knee.
But the morphine eased the pain,
And the grass grew round his brain,
And gave him all the confidence he lacked,
With a purple heart and a monkey on his back.

7. Image Hosted by ImageShack.us Pete Seeger: Guantanamera

Yo soy un hombre sincero
De donde crecen las palmas
You soy un hombre sincero
De donde crecen las palmas
Y antes de morirme quiero

(I am a truthful man,
From the land of the palm,
Before dying I want to
Share these poems of my soul)

Guantanamera! Guajira!
Guantanamera!
Guantanamera! Guajira!
Guantanamera!

8. Image Hosted by ImageShack.us Simon and Garfunkel: Sounds of Silence

In restless dreams I walk alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of an east street lamp
I turn my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes are stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sounds of silence.

9. Image Hosted by ImageShack.us Peter Paul and Mary: Listen, Mr. Bilbo (Mr. Bigot)

Now Mr. Bigot you're taking one hell of a chance,
Your good friends the Duponts came over from France.
Another thing I'm sure will be news to you,
The first Mr. Bigot was a foreigner too.

You don't like blacks: you don't like jews
Well, if there's anyone you do like it sure is news,
You don't like the Poles, Hispanics too
Anyway they serve you up, we don't like you!

10. And number 10 - not necessarily because it is my number 10 choice but because it sums it all up...those really were the days my friend...

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us Mary Hopkins: Those Were The Days, My Friend

Those were the days my friend,
We thought they'd never end,
We'd sing and dance forever and day,
We'd live the life we choose,
We'd fight and never lose,
Those were the days, oh yes, those were the days.

Oil Shortage:

THE OIL SHORTAGE

A lot of folks can't understand how we came to have
an oil shortage here in America.
~~~
Well, there's a very simple answer.
~~~
Nobody bothered to check the oil.
~~~
We just didn't know we were getting low.
~~~
The reason for that is purely geographical.
~~~
Our OIL is located in
~~~
Alaska
~~~
California
~~~
Oklahoma
and
TEXAS
~~~
But
Our
DIPSTICKS are located in
Washington DC
Fun Pics! A couple friends and I have been exchanging motivation cards to help each other in our endeavor to shed some extra pounds. Some are serious, some are reminders of what we already know we should be doing, others are whimsical. The latest whimsical deserves some space here. My challenge for the day was to have fun. There were two little gifts to insure I did just that. See pics below.
What is responsible pet care? Recently a comment was made that letting pets go outside was irresponsible because the pets could get hurt. The question was raised would I allow a two year old child out by themselves? Well, let's see...
By two years of age a cat has been walking (actually by 6 weeks of age), eating, using a litter box, fighting off deadly roaches, spiders and other small creatures that pass their way, know that the sound of a car means bad news and high tails it out as fast as it can :-), will normally not go to a stranger but again will high tail it's way in in the opposite direction... does this mean a cat (or dog) will never get hurt? No, of course not, but is locking them up away from sunshine and fresh air and exercise any better?
As for comparing them to a child of two, it just isn't fair to the cat, who's intellect and instincts are far more developed. A child of two has just started walking, isn't toilet trained, and still needs help with feeding. A child of two would not know to run out of the path of danger or away from a stranger. So, let's do a fair comparison. Would I allow a child of say 10 outside by themselves. Yes. And guess what? Children get hit by cars, abducted by strangers, and hurt in various ways when left out to play. Does this mean we should never let our children see the light of day, enjoy fresh air and go out and play with their friends? No. Does this mean a parent was irresponsible? Of course not.
Am I saying it is wrong for this other person to keep her pet inside away from any outside dangers? No, each person has their own way of caring for pets, children, etc. Does this make the other person wrong? No, it's just a difference of opinion. All I'm saying is in my most humble opinion I would feel I was doing more harm to an animal not allowing them outside to exercise and get fresh air than by keeping them inside a building all day. My opinion, folks... I am not trying to force my opinion on anyone, just stating a defense of my position.
So, even with that stated this is probably going to cause some emotional responses, because let's face it folks, people like to believe they are right and anyone who disagrees is wrong. Issues are black and white to a lot of people who have no vision of the shades of grey between. In my years on this earth I have grown to see the shades of grey. Does this mean I will change my opinion to what someone else says simply because I can see their side? No, it just means I can see their side, but also see mine and the next persons and the next persons. This is what makes life interesting.
So, let's here it folks. Do you keep your pets inside or do you allow them outside? And why? I thought this would make an intereting topic of discussion. Let's see if it works :-).
Cell phones promote rudeness! Now don't get me wrong. I have a cell phone and I use it to keep in touch with my husband during the day and friends and family. But there is a limit! The other day I was going through the check out line at the local piggly wiggly and the cashier was on her cell phone with her boyfriend the entire time she was ringing up my order! The manager saw and said nothing! Yesterday UPS delivered a package and the young man was on his cell phone, with a friend, and didn't even interrupt his call long enough to politely ask me to sign for the pkg. Just handed me the computer thingy they use and walked away continueing his conversation after I signed. Today, I went to buy my powerball numbers for Saturday and before I could say what I wanted the cashier took a call on her cell phone and walked away to have the conversation in private! Okay, now there is a limit!! Cell phones should be banned for use by employees while they are on duty. Especially those in public and customer service where there job is to be there for the customer. Just my humble opinion :-). Any other experiences like this or any opinions on this pro or con?
Just want to post this pic of me in the shirt Julie and Louise (the two women on either side of me) gave me for my birthday. If you can't read it it says: I'm not opinionated, I'm just always right. Another friend read it and said...shouldn't that say, I'm not always right, I'm just opinionated :-). Smart ass friends, but I love them anyway ;-D.
Time to dance
Woot! It's Monday and you know what that means ... time for the BDI's Monday Music Mambo. Today, let's mambo back (for some of us waaaay back) to our childhood.
Mambo Step One ...
What song do you remember most from your early childhood? Have your parents ever told you that you responded to a certain song as a child? If so, what was it and how did you respond.
Hmmmm...had to think back on this one... I would have to say The Teddy Bears Picnic. Anyone else remember that one? I can't say that my parents have ever said I responded to song, but I do remember my younger brother, Vinny, get upset over the song Nothin' For Christmas because he thought it was meant for him :-).
Mambo Step Two ...
Do you remember the song that was playing the first time you danced with someone you were attracted to? Was it a fast dance, slow dance, did that person KNOW you were attracted to them and did you ever get to dance with them again? If not, what song did you last dance to with your "sweetheart"? If neither of those questions appeal to you, what was the most memorable dance you've ever had?
Okay, let's see if I can remember this one... The Locomotion... it was a line type dance style and no, the person did not I was attracted to them. We just ended up side by side in the line. We had noon day dances at the school back then.
Mambo Step Three ...
Is there a song that you love and your bestfriend/significant other hates? How about that your significant other/bestfriend loves and you hate? If not a particular song, a particular genre of music or artist?
Ah, this is an easy one. My husband likes classical and only classical. For him it is all about the music and for me it is all about the words. So I like the old 60's rock and folk genre which drives him crazy. We have private CD players :-).
Mambo Step Four ....
Is there a popular song that your parental unit sings or dances to that would make you turn ten shades of red from embarrassment if your friends saw? If not, have you ever seen your parental unit(s) dance? Are they good are do your have to try to stifle fits of laughter? If you're not around your parents much, you can substitute another family member or ever your "sweetheart".
My parents never danced. My father didn't believe in dancing. But my mom still sings the old songs that were popular when she was young...crazy songs :-). She also loves Wayne Newton! You have to laugh at the songs my mom sings just because of the lyrics.
Okay...this is what the one song sounds like... probably totally wrong spelling...
Hutsa ralston on a rilla rah and a bralla bralla suet... ???????
<Monday Music Mambo>
Welcome back to the Monday Music Mambo where we "dance" to the beat of a different drummer. Since this is a relaunch of the Mambo we're going to be trying a variety of different formats. This week, since the Mambo is danced in 4/4 time -- let's play a numbers game.
Mambo, step one ....
Since we Mambo on Monday's, can you name four songs with "Monday" in the title? If you can't think of four, list whatever comes to mind.
1. Monday, Monday - Mamas and the Papas
2. Rainy Days and Mondays - Carpenters
3. Stormy Monday - Eric Clapton
4. Chelsea Monday - Fish
Mambo, step two ...
Can you name four songs (of any genre -- pop, rock, Christmas, Juvenile, etc.) with ...
... the number "one" in the title? ... the number "two" in the title? ... the number "three" in the title? ... the number "four" in the title? If you can't think of four, list whatever comes to mind.
1. One Song - from Snow White and the 7 Dwarves
2. One Foundation - Bob Marley
3. One Last Time - Eminem
4. Baby, One More Time - Britney Spears
Mambo step three ...
Let's get crazy! List four songs with the word, "crazy" in the title. If you can't think of four, list whatever comes to mind.
1. Crazy In Love by Beyonce
2. Shine On You Crazy Diamond - Pink Floyd
3. Crazy Train - Ozzy Osbourne
4. Crazy Nights - Kiss
Mambo, step four ...
Since the Mambo is a dance and it takes "two to Tango" (so to speak), let's entice other mamboers to dance with us..
Think of four of your favorite songs. From each song list the fourth lyric line. Other mamboers will visit your blog and try to guess the name of the song and/or the artist. Don't post the answers until your Mambo has been up at least for a full day to give other Mamboers a chance to come dance with you.
1. Healing as the colors in the sunshine and the shadows of her eyes
2. And fires burn on the sea
3. Somethin' inside tells you what's in store
4. Before she sleeps in the sand
Keys!!!Okay, so last tuesday started out like any other day. I did the laundry, made a bank deposit, mailed some packages, went to the library. I talked with my husband on the phone. I went back into the library, picked up the stack I had ready to check out. Did that. Went to my car... whoops!! the keys were locked in the car. I have never never never ever done this before!!! I felt like an idiot. Walked to the college, where my husband teaches, which is only about 10 blocks from the library. Have cell phone will travel...so he knew I was on my way. I was almost there when he pulled up and drove me back to the library. He was between classes and besides, he wanted to laugh at me a bit.
But the funniest part is I was telling my mom about it today and she related a story even funnier! She and my dad had gone golfing. They took the clubs from the trunk and put her purse in the trunk. Locked it up. On their way to the clubhouse it started raining so they left their clubs at the clubhouse and got back in the car to wait out the rain. When the rain stopped they got out, locked up the car, and realized my dad had left the keys in the car ignition!! Okay, now locking one set of keys up in a car is bad enough, but two!!! :-). They got a ride to the dealership only a couple blocks away, got a duplicate key, and walked back to the car. Unlocked it, got the keys, and played their golf.
Okay, now tell me your locked your keys in your car story!
